Liverpool’s Premier League title defence suffered another major setback on Saturday as Chelsea sealed a dramatic 2-1 victory at Stamford Bridge, condemning the Reds to their third consecutive defeat in all competitions.
Estevão Willian struck in stoppage time to secure the win for Chelsea after Cody Gakpo had levelled for Liverpool, cancelling out Moisés Caicedo’s stunning early opener.
It marked another painful night for Arne Slot’s side, who have now lost to Crystal Palace, Galatasaray, and Chelsea in successive outings a sharp contrast to their flawless start to the season. The reigning champions, who spent over £400 million on new signings this summer, have slipped to second place behind Arsenal following the Gunners’ win over West Ham.
Chelsea, on the other hand, climbed to sixth, easing pressure on under-fire manager Enzo Maresca. The Blues took the lead in the 14th minute when Caicedo capitalised on a Liverpool defensive lapse and unleashed a thunderous strike into the top corner his third goal of the campaign.
Liverpool struggled to find rhythm and fluency, with Mohamed Salah and Alexander Isak both guilty of wasting key chances. Gakpo eventually drew the visitors level midway through the second half, converting from close range after Dominik Szoboszlai’s cross.
Just when it seemed the points would be shared, Chelsea struck in stoppage time. Marc Cucurella’s cross found Estevão, who stretched to steer home the winner and send Stamford Bridge into jubilation.
An emotional Maresca raced down the touchline to celebrate with his players and was promptly shown a red card. Meanwhile, Slot was left stunned on the sidelines as his team’s title defence continued to unravel.
Chelsea’s victory, their first over Liverpool in four meetings, marked a significant boost in confidence as they continue their push for a top-four finish.
