Super Eagles Hit by Injury Setbacks Ahead of World Cup Qualifiers

Nigeria’s preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers have been dealt a blow following a series of injuries to key players, forcing head coach Eric Chelle to reshuffle his squad ahead of crucial matches against Lesotho and Benin Republic.

The Super Eagles are already without Ola Aina, Fisayo Dele-Bashiru, and Raphael Onyedika, all sidelined due to injuries. The latest withdrawals, Birmingham City defender Bright Osayi-Samuel and Rangers striker Cyriel Dessers, further weaken the team’s lineup.

To cover the gaps, Chelle has called up Porto’s Zaidu Sanusi and Crystal Palace midfielder Christantus Uche. Sanusi’s return, following a long-term injury, is seen as a major boost to Nigeria’s defense, while Uche’s inclusion offers youthful energy to the midfield.

There are also fresh concerns about Werder Bremen’s Felix Agu, who picked up a knock in a Bundesliga fixture and will undergo assessment before the qualifiers begin.

Chelle’s revised 23-man squad blends experienced players with new talents as the Super Eagles aim for maximum points in their back-to-back fixtures. Nigeria will host Lesotho before traveling to Cotonou to face Benin Republic, both matches critical to their 2026 World Cup qualification hopes.
