Mikel Obi Urges Super Eagles to ‘Fight for Nigeria’s Pride’ in Final World Cup Qualifiers

Former Super Eagles captain, John Mikel Obi, has expressed confidence that Nigeria can still secure qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, urging the players to take full responsibility and fight for national pride.

With two crucial matches remaining, Nigeria sits third in Group C—three points behind leaders South Africa and Benin Republic. The Eagles face Lesotho in Polokwane on Friday before hosting Benin Republic in Uyo for their final qualifier.

Speaking on his ObiOne Podcast, the former Chelsea midfielder admitted that Nigeria’s campaign hangs in the balance but insisted qualification is still within reach if the players show unity and determination.

> “It would be a crime, an absolute crime, if Nigeria doesn’t make it to the World Cup again,” Mikel said. “We love our football too much. The fate of the team lies in the players’ hands—they have to win these two games. No excuses.”



Mikel, who captained Nigeria at the 2018 World Cup in Russia, revealed he maintains contact with many members of the current squad and challenged them to demonstrate leadership and accountability.

> “At this stage, every off-field issue should be forgotten. It’s about the players now. Nigerians are counting on them,” he stated. “Yes, there are problems in the NFF—everyone knows that—but that shouldn’t be an excuse. Win the games first; we can talk about the rest later.”



Drawing from his experience as team captain, Mikel encouraged the likes of Victor Osimhen, Ademola Lookman, Alex Iwobi, Moses Simon, and Victor Boniface to emulate the discipline and unity that defined previous squads.

> “When I led the team, responsibility came first. You put your frustrations aside and work together. The players need to talk, regroup, and push for qualification. They have the quality to do it,” he added.



Despite Nigeria’s inconsistent run—recording five draws in eight matches—the 37-year-old remains optimistic about the team’s chances.

> “We have quality across every position—the defence is strong, the midfield balanced, and our attack among the best in Africa. What we need now is the right mentality, hunger, and focus,” Mikel emphasized.



The Super Eagles camp in Polokwane opened on Monday ahead of Friday’s clash with Lesotho at the Peter Mokaba Stadium. Victories in both remaining fixtures could see Nigeria clinch qualification and avoid missing a second consecutive World Cup.
