The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has vowed not to yield to political pressure despite mounting reports of fresh defections to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), insisting it remains steadfast in defending Nigeria’s democracy ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Speaking in Abuja, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, described the current wave of defections as a “deliberate ploy” to weaken the opposition and entrench a one-party system in the country.

> “No amount of blackmail or intimidation can silence the PDP. These defections are orchestrated attempts to turn Nigeria into a one-party state,” Ologunagba said.

He dismissed suggestions that the PDP was losing ground, recalling that the party had faced similar political turbulence in the past and always emerged stronger.

> “This is not the first time we have come under pressure. Each time, we have regrouped and come back stronger,” he added.

Recent speculations have suggested that Governors Peter Mbah (Enugu) and Douye Diri (Bayelsa) may be considering leaving the PDP reports that have unsettled party loyalists. However, aides to both governors have denied the rumours, describing them as mere political distractions.

Ologunagba accused the APC of using “coercion, intimidation, and inducement” to lure opposition politicians.

> “Most of these alleged defections are driven by coercion and inducement the APC’s familiar tactics. But Nigerians are not deceived,” he said.

According to him, the PDP is quietly working on a renewed strategy for 2027, focused on rebuilding public trust and presenting credible policy alternatives to address hunger, insecurity, and economic hardship.

> “Nigerians have not defected from poverty or insecurity. They want relief and hope and that is what the PDP stands for,” he stated.

In Enugu and Bayelsa, the speculation of possible defections has heightened internal tension, but local party leaders maintain confidence in the PDP’s grassroots strength.

Ologunagba stressed that the PDP’s struggle goes beyond party politics.

> “You cannot destroy a party that belongs to the people. The PDP is not about individuals; it represents an idea the idea of Nigeria itself,” he declared.

He added that maintaining a strong opposition was critical to protecting the nation’s democratic values.

> “The 2027 election will not just be about power; it will be about rescuing Nigeria’s democracy,” he affirmed.

The PDP spokesperson also reminded Nigerians that the party had weathered similar storms before.

> “Vice presidents and even presidents have left the PDP, yet the party remains. That’s because it’s built on the people’s ideals,” he noted.

At the PDP’s Legacy House in Abuja, preparations for the next national convention are ongoing, with meetings of key committees reflecting renewed determination to rebuild and reposition the party.

Ologunagba concluded with a message of resilience and conviction.

> “Defections may shake structures, but they cannot shake conviction. The PDP’s mission is to defend democracy and that struggle continues,” he said.
