The Kano State Hisbah Board has apprehended five individuals for allegedly conducting an unauthorized marriage ceremony without the consent of the couple’s parents.
In a statement issued on Monday, the Deputy Commander General of the board, Dr. Mujahideen Aminuddeen, confirmed that those arrested included the groom, the bride, and three others who served as representatives and a witness during the ceremony.
According to Aminuddeen, the marriage was contracted with a dowry of ₦10,000 — an amount said to fall below the minimum acceptable standard in Islamic law. He explained that the union contravened Islamic and legal marital procedures, prompting the board to commence an investigation into the incident.
The Deputy Commander General urged parents to take active interest in their children’s social and marital decisions to prevent similar occurrences.
The development comes shortly after the Kano State Government directed the Hisbah Board to commence preparations for the mass wedding of at least 2,000 couples. Aminuddeen added that all intending couples under the state’s programme must register and undergo mandatory medical screening to determine their health status before approval.
