Governor Monday Okpebholo of Edo State has relieved Dr. Maureen Ekhoragbon of her duties as Chairperson of the State Senior Secondary Education Board, with immediate effect.

The announcement was made on Monday by the Secretary to the State Government, Ikhilor Musa, who also named Dr. Rita Otibho Erewele as the new Chair of the Board. No reason was given for Ekhoragbon’s removal.

According to the statement, Dr. Erewele is “an accomplished educationist and administrator” with over 20 years of experience in Nigeria’s education sector. She holds a PhD in Educational Administration and Planning, as well as master’s and bachelor’s degrees in education from the University of Benin.

Erewele has served in several leadership positions, including as a lecturer, education consultant, and senior education officer. Her work in policy development, teacher training, and curriculum improvement has earned her recognition for excellence in academic leadership and educational reform.

The development comes shortly after the Edo State Government announced the absorption of 4,000 volunteer teachers from the EdoStar Teaching Programme and the recruitment of 500 new teachers to strengthen the state’s education system.

Commissioner for Education, Dr. Paddy Iyamu, said the initiative reflected Governor Okpebholo’s dedication to rewarding commitment and addressing teacher shortages in public schools. “On October 15, we will issue appointment letters to about 4,000 EdoStar volunteer teachers who have served diligently for the past three years,” Iyamu stated.
