The World Igbo Congress (WIC) has called on justice and freedom advocates worldwide to join a peaceful demonstration on October 20, 2025, urging the release of Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.

In a statement signed by Dr. Sir Festus Okere, WIC Chairman, and Sir Chris Ogara, Secretary General, the organization criticized Kanu’s prolonged detention without any court conviction, describing it as a blatant injustice and a blemish on Nigeria’s democracy.

WIC emphasized that Kanu’s “only weapon” has been his voice advocating justice, equity, and freedom, and not violence, yet he has remained imprisoned since his extraordinary rendition to Nigeria.

“The chains on Nnamdi Kanu are chains on freedom, justice, and truth itself,” the statement said.

The planned demonstration, to be led by activist Omoyele Sowore, was described as a moral action transcending tribal and political divides, representing a “global call for justice and fairness.”

The Congress also criticized the Nigerian government for its apparent double standards, questioning why terrorists and bandits receive amnesty while a man who speaks for justice remains behind bars.

“When governments fear the voice of their citizens, they lead through fear, not strength. The world is watching Nigeria,” WIC warned.

The organization further chastised Igbo political leaders for remaining silent during Kanu’s ordeal, accusing them of prioritizing personal comfort over courage and power over the people.

Highlighting growing international attention, WIC noted that the U.S. Senate has increased pressure on Nigeria, calling for the country to be designated as one of special concern for human rights violations.

“The world is listening. From the U.S. Senate to global human rights advocates, Nnamdi Kanu’s name now resonates internationally,” the statement added.

WIC concluded by reaffirming its dedication to justice and unity, urging the Nigerian government to free Kanu, end persecution of the Igbo, and protect Christians from attacks across the country.

“The cry of the oppressed will always outlive the silence of oppressors. God bless Nnamdi Kanu. God bless the Igbo people. God bless Nigeria,” the statement concluded.
