All eight local government chairmen in Bayelsa State have resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and declared their support for Governor Douye Diri following his own departure from the party.
The chairmen made the announcement on Wednesday evening during a press conference at the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria Secretariat in Yenagoa, the state capital.
Earlier on Wednesday, Governor Diri resigned from the PDP alongside members of the Bayelsa State House of Assembly, fueling speculation about a possible move to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). While he cited “obvious reasons” for leaving, the governor did not elaborate on his issues with the party.
Diri’s Chief Press Secretary, Daniel Alabrah, said the governor made the announcement during an expanded State Executive Council meeting at Government House, Yenagoa, which was attended by key lawmakers and party leaders. He added that Diri’s decision followed extensive consultations with state leaders, and the governor thanked his supporters for standing by him as he works to strengthen Bayelsa State.
Speaking on behalf of their colleagues, Kolokuma/Opokuma Local Government Area Chairman Lelei Isaac said the ongoing national crisis within the PDP informed their decision. “We were elected on the platform of the PDP, and today, recognizing our governor’s resignation from the party, we also resign and pledge our full support to him,” he stated.
Other chairmen present at the briefing included David Alagoa (Nembe), Target Segibo (Southern Ijaw), Bulodisiye Ndiwari (Yenagoa), Isaac Onniye (Ekeremor), Golden Jeremiah (Ogbia), and Lelei Isaac (Kolokuma/Opokuma). Chairmen Alice Tangi (Sagbama) and Lucky Febo (Brass) were absent.
