Cross River State Governor, Senator Bassey Otu, has honoured Super Falcons defender and Yakurr-born football star, Miracle Usani, with a ₦50 million cash reward, a plot of land in Calabar, and an appointment as the state’s Sports Ambassador.

Governor Otu announced the reward on Wednesday during a special reception at the Government House, Calabar, to celebrate Usani’s role in Nigeria’s triumph at the 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON). He praised her outstanding performance and her contribution to the pride of Cross River and Nigeria.

“We are delighted to have you here today,” Otu said. “Your courage and determination have inspired many. You have proven that women can achieve greatness in sports just like men—and even surpass expectations. You are now a beacon of pride for Cross River, Nigeria, and Africa.”

The governor, reflecting on his youthful days as an athlete, commended the resilience of sportsmen and women while reaffirming his administration’s commitment to rebuilding the state’s sports sector to produce future champions.

Otu described sports as “a serious commercial venture and not just a pastime,” stressing the need to channel the energy of young people toward meaningful and profitable engagement. “We celebrate you today so other young people can see that there is hope,” he added. “You have brought honour to this state, and we’ll continue to support your journey.”

Presenting the gifts, Governor Otu said, “You will receive ₦50 million and a plot of land in Calabar. You’re now part of our VVIP protocol team and will represent Cross River as our Sports Ambassador at official events.”

In her response, Miracle Usani, who plays for Edo Queens FC, expressed deep appreciation to the governor for the recognition and encouragement. She recounted her struggles as a young girl pursuing football in a male-dominated environment.

“My journey wasn’t easy,” she said. “People often discouraged me, saying football would make me masculine and unattractive. Since there were no female teams where I grew up, I played with boys. It was tough, but I stayed focused. Today, I’m proud to represent Nigeria and Cross River at the highest level.”

Usani, who also featured at the 2022 FIFA Women’s World Cup, dedicated her success to God, her parents, and the people of Cross River State, expressing hope that her story would inspire more girls to chase their dreams.
