Super Eagles midfielder and stand-in captain, Wilfred Ndidi, has been named the new vice captain of Turkish top-flight side, Beşiktaş FC.
The appointment, announced by the club’s board of directors on Friday, follows a restructuring of the team’s leadership as the Istanbul giants look to strengthen squad unity and on-field performance.
In the statement released by the club, Beşiktaş confirmed that Turkish international Orkun Kökçü has been appointed team captain, with Ndidi serving as his deputy.
“With the decision of our President, Serdal Island, and the Board of Directors, adjustments have been made regarding the captaincy of our Football A Team. Based on recommendations from the technical crew and the players’ influence on the pitch, Orkun Kökçü has been named first captain, and Wilfred Ndidi second captain,” the statement read.
The club also thanked outgoing captain Necip Uysal and vice captain Mert Günok for their service and leadership, while wishing Kökçü and Ndidi success in their new roles.
Ndidi, who joined Beşiktaş earlier this year, has quickly established himself as one of the club’s key figures, earning praise for his leadership, consistency, and work ethic. His appointment further underscores his growing influence both at the club level and within the Nigerian national team.
The new captaincy team will lead Beşiktaş out when they host Gençlerbirliği S.K. today (Saturday) in a Matchday 8 Turkish Super Lig fixture. The club currently sits sixth on the table with 13 points from seven matches.
