Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has described his team’s 2-1 victory over Liverpool at Anfield as the “biggest” of his tenure, hailing the result as fitting reward for the club’s loyal supporters.
Harry Maguire’s late header sealed United’s first win at Anfield since 2016, condemning Liverpool to a fourth consecutive defeat. The victory also marked United’s first back-to-back Premier League wins since Amorim took charge nearly a year ago.
“That was the biggest win in my time at Manchester United. It means a lot today, but tomorrow it won’t mean much,” Amorim said. “It was really important for our fans. They suffered after the Grimsby and Brentford defeats, but today they saw a different team.”
United, who had crashed out of the League Cup to fourth-tier Grimsby in August, appeared to be turning a corner with recent wins over Sunderland and Liverpool. The results have lifted them to ninth in the league, just two points behind fourth-placed Liverpool.
Bryan Mbeumo gave United an early lead after only 61 seconds. Despite Bruno Fernandes hitting the post, Liverpool pressed hard, with Cody Gakpo striking the woodwork three times before finally equalising in the 78th minute.
Maguire, often a target of criticism, became the unlikely hero when he nodded home Fernandes’s cross late in the game. “It wasn’t a well-played match, but the spirit was excellent and that’s all I can ask,” Amorim added.
Liverpool manager Arne Slot, meanwhile, blamed his side’s missed chances and poor set-piece defending for the loss. “We created eight to ten clear chances and only scored once,” Slot lamented. “It’s almost impossible to win a big game with a negative set-piece balance.”
Liverpool’s defeat leaves them four points behind Premier League leaders Arsenal and without a win in four matches their worst run since 2014.
