Human rights activist and publisher, Omoyele Sowore, has called for the immediate release of Barrister Aloy Ejimakor, counsel to detained IPOB leader Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, who was reportedly arrested by the police during the #FreeNnamdiKanu protest in Abuja.
Ejimakor, alongside Fineboy Kanu—Nnamdi Kanu’s relative—and several others, was said to have been apprehended by operatives of the Federal Capital Territory Police Command during the peaceful protest on Monday.
Reacting via his official X (formerly Twitter) handle, Sowore condemned the arrests and described the police action as an act of “illegal detention.” He warned that if the detainees were not released immediately, protesters would storm the FCT Police Command headquarters in mass resistance.
“The @FCT_PoliceNG is instructed to release Barrister @AloyEjimakor, Fineboy Kanu, and others illegally arrested, tortured, and currently being forced into detention over #FreeNnamdiKanuNow protest immediately, or we will mobilize the entire crew now on the street to occupy their office,” Sowore wrote.
Meanwhile, Presidential aide on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, criticized Ejimakor’s participation in the protest, describing it as unethical for a practicing lawyer handling a case still before the court. Onanuga urged the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) and the Legal Practitioners Disciplinary Committee (LPDC) to investigate and possibly sanction Ejimakor for what he termed “unprofessional conduct.”
