2027: Lagos APC, ADC Pledge Open Primaries, Reject Imposition Allegations

The Lagos State chapters of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the African Democratic Congress (ADC) have debunked reports suggesting that they plan to impose candidates ahead of the 2027 governorship election in the state.

Both parties emphasized that their governorship flag bearers would emerge through transparent and democratic processes consistent with their constitutions and internal guidelines.

Saturday PUNCH had earlier reported that notable figures such as the state’s Deputy Governor, Obafemi Hamzat, former Governor Akinwunmi Ambode, and the Chief of Staff to President Bola Tinubu, Femi Gbajabiamila, were being speculated as potential successors to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu. Similarly, there are indications that Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, the 2023 Labour Party governorship candidate, may contest again in 2027 under the ADC platform.

Reacting to the reports, Lagos APC spokesperson Seye Oladejo said the party welcomes all interested members to vie for the governorship ticket, provided they do so through the proper channels and in line with the party’s constitution. He clarified that the party has not received any official declaration of intent from any aspirant, describing the speculations as premature.

“All the names being mentioned are credible party members, and they are all qualified to contest,” Oladejo stated. “We are glad to have such quality individuals within our ranks. While these reports remain speculative, the true contenders will become known in due time. The APC in Lagos supports fair competition and internal democracy — unlike other parties struggling to produce credible candidates.”

Oladejo further claimed that the opposition poses no significant threat, asserting that rival parties are disorganized and lack the capacity to challenge the APC’s dominance in the state.

Echoing similar sentiments, Lagos ADC Chairman George Ashiru affirmed that the ADC would provide a level playing field for all aspirants, regardless of their profile or popularity.

“Everyone who meets the constitutional and electoral requirements is eligible to contest,” Ashiru said. “High-profile entrants like Rhodes-Vivour will not be automatically favored. The ADC will follow due process when the time comes to select its candidates.”

He added that the party remains committed to fairness and internal democracy as preparations for the 2027 elections gather momentum.
