The detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, has withdrawn his earlier plan to call witnesses in his ongoing trial at the Federal High Court in Abuja. This marks a significant shift in his defence strategy as the case continues to draw national and international attention.
Kanu, who has been in detention for several years, initially indicated his intention to invite witnesses to testify in his favour. However, his legal team has now informed the court that he will no longer be calling any witnesses to the stand.
Explaining the decision, Kanu maintained that there are no valid charges currently pending against him. He argued that the prosecution has failed to present any credible case or evidence warranting a defence, insisting that his continued detention lacks legal justification.
The development has sparked fresh debate among observers and supporters of the IPOB leader, many of whom view the move as a demonstration of confidence in the weakness of the prosecution’s case. The court is expected to fix a new date for further proceedings in the matter.
