Tech billionaire Elon Musk has unveiled Grokipedia, a new online encyclopedia developed by his company xAI, aimed at rivaling Wikipedia, which he has repeatedly accused of having a left-wing ideological bias.
Launched on Monday, Grokipedia, currently tagged as version 0.1, already hosts more than 885,000 articles, compared to Wikipedia’s over seven million in English. Musk promised that an upcoming version 1.0 will be “10 times better,” claiming that even the current version “is already better than Wikipedia.”
> “The goal of Grok and Grokipedia.com is the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth,” Musk wrote on X (formerly Twitter). “We will never be perfect, but we shall nonetheless strive towards that goal.”
Originally scheduled for release in September, the launch was delayed to allow time to “purge out the propaganda,” Musk explained in a separate post.
Musk has long been a vocal critic of Wikipedia. In 2024, he accused the platform of being “controlled by far-left activists” and urged people to stop donating to it. More recently, he argued that Wikipedia should not be used as a reliable reference for Community Notes on X, claiming the site’s editorial oversight is “extremely left-biased.”
According to xAI, Grokipedia’s content is generated using artificial intelligence, powered by the company’s generative AI system, Grok.
An entry about Musk on Grokipedia describes the Tesla and SpaceX CEO as a figure who has “influenced debates on technology, demographic trends, and institutional bias, often via X,” while noting “criticism from legacy media outlets exhibiting systemic left-leaning tendencies.”
Wikipedia Faces Decline in Human Traffic
Meanwhile, the Wikimedia Foundation (WMF), the non-profit that manages Wikipedia, has reported an 8% decline in human pageviews compared to the same period last year. The organisation attributes the drop to the growing influence of generative AI and shifts in how people access information through search engines and social media.
Marshall Miller, WMF’s Senior Director of Product (Core Experiences), said the decline reflects “a fundamental change in how the public discovers information,” explaining that search engines now provide direct answers often drawn from Wikipedia content, without users visiting the site itself.
WMF also noted that an earlier spike in traffic was later identified as bot activity. After adjusting its detection systems, the foundation reclassified data from March through August, confirming an 8% overall decrease compared to 2024.
Founded in 2001, Wikipedia is a collaborative online encyclopedia written and maintained by volunteers worldwide. It is largely funded through public donations and operates on a principle of neutral point of view, allowing anyone to write or edit articles.
