The Kano State Government has approved two landmark initiatives to enhance infrastructure, strengthen power supply, and expand access to affordable housing across the state.
In a statement released on Sunday by the governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Bature, the government announced plans to acquire majority shares in the Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO) and to construct 50 low-cost housing estates across 36 local government areas outside the Kano metropolis.
According to the statement, the decision to take control of KEDCO aligns with Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s broader agenda to reform the power sector—covering electricity generation, transmission, and distribution. The government said increased ownership would enable improved efficiency, accountability, and service delivery in tackling long-standing issues of power outages and poor infrastructure.
The initiative is also expected to stimulate industrial development, generate employment, and attract both local and foreign investment, considering Kano’s heavy dependence on reliable power for its commercial and manufacturing sectors.
Additionally, the State Executive Council approved the presentation and adoption of the new Kano State Electricity Policy under the Ministry of Power and Renewable Energy. The policy outlines strategies for sustainable energy growth, integration of renewable sources, and improved operational efficiency to ensure long-term energy security.
“The administration of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf remains steadfast in its vision to make Kano an energy-secure, business-friendly state that promotes innovation, industrialisation, and inclusive economic development,” the statement said.
In a related development, the government also approved the construction of 50 low-cost housing estates across 36 local government areas outside the metropolis to bridge the housing gap and provide affordable homes for low- and middle-income earners.
The project will feature essential infrastructure such as access roads, electricity, and water supply, ensuring comfort and sustainability for future residents. It is expected to create thousands of direct and indirect jobs for contractors, engineers, and artisans, while stimulating local economies.
“This initiative demonstrates Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s commitment to equitable development and his resolve to ensure that every part of Kano State benefits from sustainable infrastructure,” the statement concluded.
The government reaffirmed its dedication to implementing projects that enhance living standards and promote socio-economic growth across the state.
