Governor Chukwuma Soludo of Anambra State has stated that the ongoing violence in the South-East is not religiously motivated, stressing that “Christians are killing Christians” in the region.
Soludo made the remark while responding to U.S. President Donald Trump’s recent classification of Nigeria as a Country of Particular Concern and his threat of possible military intervention against Islamic extremists in Northern Nigeria.
Speaking during a media chat on Monday, Soludo said that while the U.S. has the right to express its views, Nigeria must engage in deeper introspection about its internal conflicts.
> “In Eastern Nigeria, it is not about religion,” he said. “People are killing one another, and most of those involved bear Christian names. Thousands of our youths have been maimed or killed. It has nothing to do with religion.”
The governor urged for constructive dialogue and a comprehensive approach to resolving the crisis, expressing confidence that the Nigerian government would respond decisively to safeguard the nation.
Meanwhile, the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has declared its support for Trump’s stance, vowing to “fully back” his efforts to “end ethno-religious genocide in Nigeria.”
In a statement released by the group’s U.S. chapter and signed by its Media and Publicity Secretary, Emma Powerful, IPOB urged Nigerians in the United States to resist attempts by the Nigerian government to “launder its image” following Trump’s designation. The group also announced plans to mobilize protests against a scheduled meeting between a Nigerian government delegation and Trump.
Reports indicate that the delegation is expected to arrive in the U.S. today for discussions with the American president concerning the designation.
The U.S. government recently redesignated Nigeria as a Country of Particular Concern following Trump’s comments that Christianity is facing “an existential threat” in the country due to widespread killings.
> “Thousands of Christians are being killed. Radical Islamists are responsible for this mass slaughter,” Trump said on Friday. “Nigeria is hereby designated a ‘Country of Particular Concern’, and that’s just the beginning.”
However, the Nigerian government maintains that the attacks are not targeted specifically at Christians, while acknowledging ongoing security challenges nationwide.
