ASITU Urges Tinubu to Halt Demolition of Igbo Properties in Lagos

The Association of Igbo Town Unions (ASITU) has appealed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to intervene and stop the ongoing demolition of properties belonging to Igbo people in Lagos State.

In a statement issued in Umuahia, the group called on the Federal Government, including President Tinubu, the Minister of Works and Housing, and the Attorney-General of the Federation, to prevail on the Lagos State Government to halt the exercise and adopt a spirit of unity and fairness.

ASITU President, Chief Emeka Diwe, emphasized that the longstanding relationship between the Igbo and Yoruba communities has been a central part of Nigeria’s history—marked by both collaboration and competition, but deeply connected.

“We must not allow these demolitions to destroy that bond,” Diwe warned. “Nigeria is slowly dying from ethnic discrimination, selective justice, constitutional breaches, and the erosion of public trust. These demolitions must stop, and the pattern of selective enforcement must end.”

The union further noted that the affected properties were not illegal structures or temporary settlements but long-standing investments. “These are life investments—plazas where mothers trade to support their families, warehouses where young men store goods for their businesses, and shops built through years of hard work and hope,” ASITU stated.
