The Managing Director of the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), Mr. Akintunde Sawyerr, has called on Ogun State residents to encourage their children in public tertiary institutions to take advantage of the Federal Government’s student loan scheme initiated by President Bola Tinubu.
Sawyerr disclosed that the Fund has so far disbursed ₦116 billion in tuition payments and monthly stipends since the programme’s inception last year.
He made the disclosure on Friday during a sensitisation exercise held at Ijebu Ife in the Ijebu East Local Government Area of the state.
According to him, President Tinubu launched the initiative to ensure that no Nigerian is denied access to higher education due to financial hardship.
“President Tinubu is determined to make life better for all Nigerians. He recognises that education drives national development — just as it has done in advanced countries. That’s why he has made substantial funding available to ensure that every child can attend school through this loan scheme,” Sawyerr said.
He added, “So far, ₦116 billion has been disbursed since the programme began. No parent should keep their child at home due to lack of funds. Education is now within everyone’s reach, and I urge all parents to spread this message across the state.”
Also speaking, NELFUND’s Executive Director of Finance and Administration, Dr. Frederick Akinfala, debunked claims that beneficiaries’ certificates would be withheld or that they would be penalised for repayment issues, stressing that such rumours are false and not reflected in the NELFUND Act.
“This is a no-guarantor loan.
