The Osun State chapter of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has fixed December 13, 2025, for its primary election to select its flagbearer for the 2026 governorship poll.
This was disclosed in a statement signed by the state chairman, Mr. Tosin Odeyemi, and made available to journalists in Osogbo, the state capital, on Friday.
Odeyemi stated that the party had concluded arrangements to ensure a smooth and credible primary election. He emphasized that the NNPP was not contesting merely to participate but was determined to win the 2026 governorship race.
According to him, the party currently has no fewer than four declared aspirants, with more individuals indicating interest in joining the contest. “The 2026 gubernatorial election will be a different ball game in Osun. We are set to spring surprises,” he declared.
Speaking further, Odeyemi described the NNPP as the “new bride” in Osun politics, noting that the party was attracting defectors from both the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the All Progressives Congress (APC), which are currently grappling with internal divisions.
He expressed confidence that the electorate in Osun were ready to rally behind the NNPP candidate after the December primary. Odeyemi also urged members to keep sensitizing the public about the party’s programmes designed to ease the prevailing economic hardship in the country.
Meanwhile, political activities are intensifying across Osun State ahead of the August 8, 2026, governorship election. Several parties, including the APC and PDP, have also scheduled their primaries for December.
The APC will hold its primary on the same day, December 13, with at least 13 aspirants already in the race, including the Managing Director of the National Inland Waterways Authority, Mr. Bola Oyebamiji; former Deputy Governor Senator Iyiola Omisore; former Senate Committee Chairman Senator Babajide Omoworare; and Mr. Dotun Babayemi.
Others are former Deputy Governor Benedict Alabi, Mutual Assurance Benefits Chairman Akin Ogunbiyi, and legal practitioner Kunle Adegoke.
Governor Ademola Adeleke has also been cleared by the PDP to seek re-election in the forthcoming governorship contest.
