After more than a decade without a gold medal, Russia celebrated a major victory at the 2026 Winter Paralympics in Milan-Cortina, Italy. Para alpine skier Varvara Voronchikhina captured the women’s Super-G standing event, giving the nation a triumphant return to the top of the Paralympic podium.

Voronchikhina, 23, completed the course with remarkable speed and precision, finishing well ahead of her rivals. Her performance not only earned her gold but also showcased her as one of the standout athletes of the Games.

This win comes as Russian athletes competed under their national flag for the first time in years, following a period of bans and restrictions. Despite having a small team, Russia managed to make a strong impact thanks to Voronchikhina’s exceptional run.

The medal ceremony was particularly significant, marking the return of Russia’s national anthem at the Paralympics for the first time since 2014, a symbolic moment of pride for the country and its sports community.
