Anthony Joshua is preparing for a highly anticipated return to the boxing ring before the end of 2025, though the former two-time world heavyweight champion will not headline his comeback fight.
‘AJ’ last fought in September 2024, losing to Daniel Dubois in the fifth round at Wembley Stadium in London in an IBF Heavyweight Championship bout. An elbow injury requiring surgery in June delayed his return, with Joshua emphasizing the need to “get my body right” before stepping back into the ring.
Despite expectations that he might wait until 2026, promoter Eddie Hearn has confirmed plans for Joshua to fight next month. Speaking to Boxing Social, Hearn revealed the heavyweight could return on December 20 in Accra, Ghana, appearing on the undercard of Craig Richards vs. Dan Azeez. “It wouldn’t be a headline, it wouldn’t be a pay-per-view… it’s just part of the development of getting into a position of being 100% ready for the big gamble,” Hearn explained.
A potential twist could see Joshua facing social media star Jake Paul. With Paul seeking a high-profile opponent after his scheduled fight with Gervonta Davis fell through, discussions between him and Joshua are reportedly underway. Hearn said, “If he genuinely wants to fight Anthony Joshua, I don’t see why we wouldn’t have a chance to do that fight.”
Joshua, who boasts a professional record of 28 wins and four losses with notable victories over Francis Ngannou, Joseph Parker, and Dillian Whyte, remains focused on reclaiming the world heavyweight title for a third time. His December fight could mark the first step on that journey.
