The Edo State Government has approved N1 billion in soft loans to support market women in expanding their businesses and improving livelihoods, the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Eugenia Abdallah, announced on Saturday in Benin City.

Speaking at a press conference, Abdallah highlighted the achievements of the state under its SHINE Agenda, emphasizing the government’s commitment to grassroots women who play a vital role in the local economy. She stated that 54,000 women have been targeted for entrepreneurial training, access to microfinance, and skills development programs as part of Governor Monday Okpebholo’s drive to enhance women’s economic empowerment.

“The state government has approved N1 billion in soft loans to boost the businesses of market women,” Abdallah said, commending Governor Okpebholo for his dedication to inclusive governance, noting that women currently occupy 35 percent of cabinet positions. “This administration has made women’s empowerment a reality, not just a promise.”

Abdallah also highlighted the ministry’s social protection initiatives for vulnerable groups, including rehabilitation and shelter services for trafficked women, rape survivors, and victims of domestic violence, ensuring that affected children receive proper care.

In the area of skills development, she revealed that the Uromi and Igarra Skills Acquisition Centres have been revitalized, producing over 140 graduates in 2025, while the Evbuomodu Centre is being upgraded in collaboration with the Edo State Skills Development Agency to expand opportunities for women and youth.

Expressing gratitude to Governor Okpebholo and the Coordinator of the Office of the Edo First Lady, Edesili Anani, Abdallah said, “We are building a future where every woman and child in Edo State can live with dignity, contribute meaningfully, and reach their full potential. Together, we will continue to make Edo shine brighter.”

She concluded that the state’s investments in women’s empowerment are part of a deliberate strategy to foster inclusive growth and sustainable development across Edo State.
