The Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, says the proposed School of Fishery/Marine College in Iragbiji, Osun State, is a key component of Nigeria’s developing Blue Economy agenda.
Speaking at the 34th Iragbiji Day Celebration over the weekend, Oyetola said the new institution would equip young Nigerians with practical knowledge in aquaculture, marine sciences, and sustainable environmental management.
The event, held in Iragbiji, attracted notable personalities including the Aragbiji of Iragbiji, Oba Abdur-Rasheed Ayotunde Olabomi (Odundun IV), traditional rulers across Osun State, industry leaders, and thousands of indigenes.
Oyetola urged the community to see the new federal institutions as “living legacies that will shape the destiny of our children and generations yet unborn.”
He highlighted the establishment of the Federal University of Agriculture and Development Studies, Iragbiji (FUADSI), and the approval for the School of Fisheries as transformative milestones for the town.
“These two monumental institutions represent a generational blessing, a legacy that will change the face of Iragbiji forever,” he said. According to him, the university will drive innovation, expand job opportunities, and attract both local and international partnerships.
Reiterating that the School of Fisheries fits into the country’s Blue Economy strategy, he explained that the school would help build a skilled workforce needed for sustainable marine development.
The Minister also called on residents to continue supporting President Bola Tinubu, describing his administration’s development initiatives as fair, inclusive, and worthy of collective backing.
Oyetola praised the Aragbiji of Iragbiji for fostering peace and unity, adding that the town’s progress is a testament to the monarch’s leadership. He advised youths to avoid drug abuse and crime, stressing that lasting success requires hard work and integrity.
The celebration featured cultural displays, reunions, and fundraising activities, with indigenes reaffirming their commitment to the growth and development of Iragbiji.
