Washington Spirit head coach Adrián González has hailed Gift Monday’s on-field chemistry as a key factor in the team’s march to the 2025 NWSL Championship after their 2-0 semifinal victory over Portland Thorns at Audi Field.

Monday, who opened the scoring in the 27th minute, has formed a dynamic partnership with Rosemonde Kouassi, blending speed, timing, and precision to dismantle opposing defenses. González noted in his post-match press conference that the pair’s connection extends beyond matchday, with off-field time spent together strengthening their intuitive understanding during games.

“Monday and Rose, they love each other—that’s why. They spend a lot of time together dancing and hanging out,” González said. He added that while personal bonds are important, the coaching staff also deliberately fosters on-field connections through structured training exercises emphasizing communication, movement anticipation, timing of passes, body positioning, and rhythm.

“Every movement, every pass—whether it’s the rhythm, the pace, or the weight of the pass, the body shape—we create situations that help them communicate without words,” he explained. González stressed that this approach applies across the squad, helping other players like Croix Bethune and Sofia develop intuitive connections that enhance the team’s fluid attacking play.

The impact of this chemistry was evident in the semifinal. After an early VAR-reviewed disallowed goal, Washington remained composed and patient. The breakthrough came via a counterattack led by Kouassi, who delivered a perfectly weighted pass to Monday for the opener. The duo’s productivity this season is notable, with six of Kouassi’s seven assists directly benefiting Monday.

Bethune later sealed the 2-0 win with a second goal, sending Washington to its second consecutive NWSL final. González emphasized the importance of mental preparation heading into the championship, noting the team’s focus on routines and calmness amid media attention and high expectations.

The Spirit will face their championship opponent at PayPal Park in California on Saturday, with Monday’s goal-scoring prowess and team chemistry playing a pivotal role in Washington’s pursuit of a second NWSL title.
