A Catholic priest and several other Christians were reportedly kidnapped in a violent raid in Kaduna State, resulting in the death of at least one person. The priest, identified as Rev. Fr. Sylvester Okechukwu, was seized from his rectory in Tachira, Kaura Local Government Area. His lifeless body was later found, underscoring the brutality of the attackers.
The Southern Kaduna Christian Leaders Association (SKCLA) condemned the attack, highlighting a disturbing pattern of violence against religious figures in the region. SKCLA chairman Apostle Emmanuel Nuhu Kure urged both state and federal authorities to implement stronger measures to protect communities at risk and prevent further attacks.
The Diocese of Kafanchan expressed profound sorrow over the death of Fr. Okechukwu. Fr. Jacob Shanet, Chancellor of the diocese, described the priest as a committed and beloved spiritual leader. He called on parishioners to remain calm and avoid any form of retaliation while the church makes arrangements for the late priest’s funeral.
This incident adds to a rising wave of kidnappings and violent attacks targeting religious leaders and civilians in Kaduna State. International observers, including the U.S. Mission in Nigeria, have condemned the violence, urging the Nigerian government to step up security measures to protect vulnerable communities. Human rights and faith-based organizations continue to press for urgent action to curb the increasing insecurity in the region.
