Tensions Boil Over as Police Fire Teargas During PDP Leadership Clash in Abuja

Violence broke out at the Peoples Democratic Party’s National Secretariat in Wadata Plaza, Abuja, on Tuesday, forcing police to fire teargas to control supporters amid an escalating leadership tussle between rival factions.

According to Channels Television, the unrest began when Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed, and allies of newly elected PDP National Chairman Kabiru Turaki arrived at the party headquarters.

Their presence sparked confrontations with police and supporters loyal to Senator Samuel Anyanwu’s faction, who attempted to block their entry into the premises. Security operatives aligned with FCT Minister Nyesom Wike and the two governors also clashed in a tense standoff over control of the secretariat, leading to the use of teargas to restore order.

Makinde eventually gained entry alongside newly elected National Secretary Taofeek Arapaja, while Wike, who arrived separately, stayed in his vehicle for over 30 minutes. Afterward, Makinde and Mohammed briefed journalists on the confrontation, as police later directed all party members and supporters to vacate the building to restore calm.
