Nigerian comedians Freedom Atsepoyi, popularly known as Mr Jollof, and social media activist Martins Otse, aka VeryDarkMan, have apologised following a disruptive incident on a United Nigeria Airlines flight. Despite their apologies, the airline confirmed that its investigation into the matter is still ongoing.
In separate video statements, both men recounted their versions of the incident and sought forgiveness from the airline and the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), acknowledging the inconvenience caused to passengers. The duo could face criminal charges for the altercation, which led to flight delays.
On Instagram, Mr Jollof explained that he acted in self-defence, emphasising that he is not a violent person. He also apologised to affected passengers, the airline, and the NCAA.
“I want to sincerely apologise to the NCAA, United Nigeria Airlines, and the passengers. I was only defending myself. I am very sorry if I delayed your appointments. I promise this will not happen again,” he said.
While Mr Jollof pledged to avoid such incidents in the future, VeryDarkMan admitted he could not make the same guarantee but promised that such behaviour would never occur in public spaces, particularly on aircraft.
“What happened yesterday was not supposed to happen, and I take full responsibility for it,” VDM said. “I apologise to passengers, especially one lady who kept asking me to sit. I cannot guarantee it will never happen again, but I assure it will not occur in a public place that disrupts others’ schedules.”
United Nigeria Airlines spokesperson Chibuike Uloka confirmed that the investigation remains active, noting that the airline has not yet taken an official position regarding the incident or the apologies.
