Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, has expressed deep sorrow over the death of Mr. Olusegun Awolowo Jr., grandson of the late nationalist, Chief Obafemi Awolowo. The former Executive Director of the Nigerian Export Promotion Council (NEPC) died at the age of 62.
His family confirmed the passing in a statement on Thursday, describing him as a devoted public servant, loving husband, father, and grandfather.
“With extremely heavy hearts, we announce the passing of our beloved Olusegun Awolowo,” the family said. “He served Nigeria with vision, integrity, passion, and unwavering commitment.”
In his condolence message, Governor Abiodun said the news came as a rude shock, describing Awolowo as “a gentleman par excellence, courageous, intelligent, and exceptionally amiable.” He noted that their relationship held fond memories he would always cherish.
The governor highlighted Awolowo’s remarkable public service career, noting that despite losing his father shortly before birth, he rose above early adversity to build an impactful life.
Called to the Bar in 1989, Awolowo worked with the law firms of Abayomi Sogbesan & Co. and GOK Ajayi & Co., later serving as Special Assistant to former Presidents Olusegun Obasanjo and Umaru Musa Yar’Adua. He held key government roles between 2007 and 2011 before leading the NEPC from 2013 to 2021.
His contributions to trade development earned him election as President of National Trade Promotion Organizations (TPOs) of ECOWAS member states in 2021.
“His life may have been brief, but it was profoundly impactful,” Abiodun said.
The governor prayed for comfort for Awolowo’s wife, children, and the entire Awolowo family, urging them to take solace in the legacy he left behind.
“May his gentle soul rest in perfect peace,” he said.
