An education-rights group has cautioned the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) against compelling students to register for unfamiliar or newly imposed subjects in the 2026 exams, noting that many candidates have never been taught these courses.
The group raised concerns that some students nearing graduation might be required to take subjects they did not study under the previous curriculum. They warned that such a move would be unfair and could disrupt students’ academic preparation, particularly for those who had already chosen specific subject combinations.
Amid confusion and uncertainty in schools, the group urged WAEC to allow candidates to sit only for subjects they have formally studied.
They also called on education authorities to provide clear communication and ensure proper preparation before implementing any major changes to curricula or examination requirements.
