A harrowing video reveals the devastating aftermath of a powerful ocean surge that has ravaged Ayetoro community in Ilaje Local Government Area. The footage shows ruined streets, crumbling buildings, and desperate attempts by residents to erect concrete barriers around the community’s remaining structures — a last‑ditch effort to stem the sea’s advance.

Residents report that more than 600 homes, along with factories, schools, markets, churches, and other infrastructure, have been destroyed as the Atlantic Ocean relentlessly encroaches upon the coastline. The waters are now just a few meters away from heritage structures, highlighting the precarious situation.

One local lamented that about eighty percent of the broad streets are now submerged or destroyed, reflecting not only the loss of homes but the collapse of the community’s layout and social fabric. Factories that once provided livelihoods lie in ruins, and farmlands vital for sustenance and income have also been wiped out.

Despite repeated warnings about sea‑level rise and coastal erosion, locals accuse successive administrations of neglect, noting that funds allocated to protect vulnerable shoreline communities like Ayetoro remain unused. The sense of abandonment and urgency is palpable.

Civic groups have issued a plea for immediate intervention, calling on government and relevant agencies to implement coastal defenses, land reclamation, and long‑term resilience planning. Without urgent action, residents fear the community may soon vanish completely under the waves.
