A statement by former Abia State Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Chief Charles Ogbonna, has drawn attention for its disparaging remarks against Governor Alex Otti. Chief Ogbonna alleged that Governor Otti’s recent visit to President Bola Tinubu was not about addressing the matter of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, but rather to plot a defection to the APC, alongside a series of personal attacks. The state government, however, has chosen to address the claims, highlighting the need to clarify the facts given the sensitivity of the Kanu issue.

Governor Otti’s visit to Aso Rock followed his meeting with the IPOB leader at the Sokoto Correctional Centre on November 30, 2025, as part of ongoing efforts over the past two years to engage the Federal Government on Kanu’s situation. Sources confirmed that the discussions were focused solely on Kanu, and the President received the Governor graciously, resulting in a productive meeting. Claims that the Governor was lobbying to join the APC were described as unfounded, petty, and absurd, noting that any party would welcome him given his political stature and achievements.

The government also pointed to Chief Ogbonna’s personal grievances as a possible source of his hostility. Having previously benefited from state compensation over the Agbozu Cocoa Plantation, Ogbonna reportedly felt slighted when his request for a political appointment for his son was declined. The administration emphasized that such personal disappointments do not justify the public disparagement of the Governor or his constructive governance initiatives.

Further addressing Ogbonna’s attacks, the government criticized his approach to leadership, describing it as outdated and self-serving, focused on personal gain rather than public service. The statement underscored that Governor Otti’s actions, including infrastructure projects like the Umuahia-Ikot Ekpene road, are guided by the public interest, peace, and security. Ogbonna’s politicization of the Governor’s engagements with the Federal Government was labeled misplaced, highlighting the need for wisdom, diplomacy, and emotional intelligence in addressing issues of national importance.
