Abia State 2027 governorship hopeful, Chief Mascot Uzor Kalu, has urged political stakeholders to embrace a healthier and more constructive democratic culture, stressing that opposition should be viewed as a partner in development rather than an adversary.
Speaking in a statement released in Aba on Thursday, Mascot underscored the need for issue-based engagement, cooperation, and open debate as foundations for a progressive and forward-moving Abia. He maintained that democracy flourishes when diverse viewpoints are respected and allowed to enrich governance.
“The strength of our democracy lies in the freedom of the opposition to question, critique, and propose alternatives,” he noted. “Opposition is not enmity. It is a shared commitment to ensuring that government remains accountable and responsive.”
He clarified that his position was not aimed at stoking political tensions but at ensuring that the voices of Abians are actively represented. Mascot called on citizens to embrace more tolerant political conversations, noting that constructive disagreement is essential to good governance.
Speaking on his ongoing consultations ahead of the 2027 governorship race, the APC aspirant highlighted his agenda anchored on economic renewal, inclusive stewardship, and people-first development. “My aspiration is rooted in service,” he said. “Abia possesses immense potential and with deliberate policies and the right leadership ethos, we can create opportunities that uplift every community.”
Mascot appealed to political leaders across all parties to prioritize the interests of the people above partisan rivalry, stressing that the state’s progress depends on unity of purpose. “Abia must come first,” he emphasized. “Regardless of political differences, our collective responsibility is to safeguard the state’s future.”
