Coaches and technical officials involved in the Niger Delta Games are set to undergo a specialized training programme aimed at enhancing their skills ahead of the 2026 edition.
Sir Itiako Ikpokpo, Managing Director of Dunamis Icon Limited—the managing consultant for the games—announced the initiative during an interview with Channels Sports.
Speaking on sustaining talent discovery in the region, Ikpokpo highlighted the challenges posed by low coach remuneration and questioned how they are expected to travel to communities to scout for talent under such conditions.
“We are partnering with the Niger Delta Development Commission and, for this event, the Nigeria Local Content Development and Management Board to host a workshop in January for coaches and technical officials,” he said.
Ikpokpo also urged both state and federal governments to invest in sports infrastructure at the same level as they fund roads and hospitals. “For sports to thrive, there must be serious investment in sports facilities. Building roads and hospitals is important, but so is developing sports infrastructure.”
He further criticized the design of schools in Nigeria, noting that many are constructed without sports facilities. “Schools are the foundation of sports development, yet many are built without playgrounds or sports amenities,” he said.
Ikpokpo assured that the second edition of the Niger Delta Games, scheduled to hold in Benin, Edo State, will see significant improvements across all areas compared to the inaugural event.
