The Handball Federation of Nigeria (HFN) has strongly condemned the alleged abduction of the Benue Buffaloes handball team — an incident that occurred just after the conclusion of the Ardova Handball Premier League 2025 Phase 2. The players and officials were reportedly kidnapped by armed men while returning from Lagos, shortly after passing through the Otukpo area in Benue State.
According to HFN, the team was later rescued thanks to a swift intervention by the Nigerian Army, which prevented what could have turned into a more tragic outcome.
In a statement issued by HFN President Jibril Saidu Ojih, he described the ordeal as “a sad and heartbreaking ordeal that no athlete, coach, or official should ever be subjected to.” He extended his deepest sympathies to the players, coaches, and management of the Buffaloes and thanked God and the army for their safe rescue.
Ojih also expressed condolences to the Benue State Sports Ministry, acknowledging the emotional and psychological toll the incident has had on the state’s broader sports community. He urged authorities to improve security for travelling teams, stressing that athlete welfare must become a national priority.
Finally, Ojih reassured the Buffaloes that HFN will stand by them — offering support as they recover physically and emotionally, and helping them prepare for future competitions.
