The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has formally petitioned FIFA over the Democratic Republic of Congo’s (DR Congo) alleged fielding of ineligible players during the African playoffs for the 2026 World Cup.
DR Congo defeated Nigeria 4–3 on penalties to advance to the inter-confederation playoffs, where they will face the winner of Jamaica versus New Caledonia. Several players in the Congolese squad are foreign-born and were reportedly only recently cleared to represent the country. Under DR Congo’s nationality laws, dual citizenship is not recognized after the age of 21, raising questions about the players’ eligibility.
NFF General Secretary Mohammed Sanusi accused the Congolese Football Association of misleading FIFA to gain clearance for players who violate DR Congo’s citizenship laws. “FIFA cleared the players because its eligibility rules differ from DR Congo’s internal laws,” Sanusi explained. “Our contention is that FIFA was deceived, as it was presented with misleading information about the players’ status.”
Sanusi described the DR Congo FA’s actions as “fraudulent,” insisting the players should not have been eligible for selection. The NFF hopes FIFA will review the petition and take appropriate action.
The Super Eagles’ defeat marks Nigeria’s second consecutive failure to qualify for the World Cup, following their absence in the 2022 Qatar tournament.
