Macclesfield FC and the wider football community are in mourning after the club confirmed the death of 21‑year-old forward Ethan McLeod, who was killed in a car accident while travelling home following an away game.

McLeod was returning from Macclesfield’s 2–1 victory over Bedford Town on Tuesday night when his vehicle collided with a barrier on the M1 motorway near Northampton at around 10:40 p.m. Emergency responders attempted to help, but he was tragically pronounced dead at the scene.

In a heartfelt statement, Macclesfield FC described McLeod as “an incredibly talented and well‑respected member” of the first team and praised his infectious personality, dedication, and work ethic. The club said news of his passing has left players, staff, and supporters “devastated,” and extended their deepest condolences to his family and friends.

McLeod had joined Macclesfield in July after progressing through the Wolverhampton Wanderers youth academy and also had spells with semi‑professional sides including Alvechurch, Rushall Olympic, and Stourbridge. Police are continuing to investigate the circumstances of the collision, and the football world has expressed an outpouring of grief for the young player whose life and career were cut short.
