Nigeria’s Super Eagles kicked off their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) campaign with a hard-fought 2–1 victory over Tanzania on Tuesday night in Fes, Morocco, securing maximum points in their Group C opener.
Coming into the tournament under intense scrutiny following their failure to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the Super Eagles showed resolve and composure, despite being tested by a well-organised Tanzanian side.
Nigeria dominated possession for much of the encounter and broke the deadlock in the 36th minute when defender Semi Ajayi powered home a header from an Alex Iwobi cross after sustained pressure. The West Africans appeared to double their lead moments after the restart, but Victor Osimhen’s close-range effort was ruled out for offside following a VAR review.
Tanzania responded strongly and drew level in the 52nd minute through Charles M’Mombwa, who finished first time after a swift attacking move that caught Nigeria’s defence off guard. The equaliser briefly unsettled the Super Eagles, but their response was swift.
Just minutes later, Ademola Lookman restored Nigeria’s lead, latching onto a pass from Iwobi outside the box before firing a low shot beyond goalkeeper Zuberi Foba. The Atalanta forward’s strike proved decisive as Nigeria managed the game effectively in the closing stages.
Osimhen, who partnered Akor Adams in attack, had several opportunities to extend the lead but was repeatedly denied by Tanzania’s compact defence and the impressive goalkeeping of Foba. Head coach Eric Chelle also turned to his bench late on, introducing Paul Onuachu to help preserve the advantage.
Tanzania, led by captain Mbwana Samatta, remained dangerous on the counter and nearly snatched a late equaliser, with Ibrahim Hamad missing a gilt-edged chance in stoppage time. Despite the defeat, the East Africans impressed with their competitiveness and discipline.
Nigeria eventually held on for victory, earning a positive start in Group C as they seek to build momentum in their quest for continental glory in Morocco.
