The Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) has announced that the National Identification Number (NIN) will now serve as an automatic Tax Identification Number (TIN) for Nigerians, as part of efforts to strengthen tax administration and expand the country’s tax net.

According to the agency, the new policy is designed to simplify the tax registration process by linking individuals’ tax records directly to their NIN, eliminating the need for separate TIN registration. FIRS said the move will reduce duplication, improve efficiency, and enhance compliance across the tax system.

Officials explained that integrating the NIN with tax records will also help curb tax evasion, improve data accuracy, and ensure that eligible taxpayers are properly captured in the national database. The initiative is aligned with the Federal Government’s broader digital transformation agenda.

The revenue service assured Nigerians that the process would be seamless, stressing that existing taxpayers would not need to re-register. Instead, their tax information would be harmonised with their NIN through collaboration with relevant government agencies.

FIRS urged citizens to ensure their NIN details are accurate and up to date, noting that the reform is aimed at creating a more transparent, efficient, and inclusive tax system to support national development.
