Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, OFR, on Wednesday joined the family of the late Pastor (Dr.) Gideon Chimaeze Nwaogwugwu, friends, church leaders and well-wishers to pay his last respects as the revered cleric was laid to rest in his hometown of Okpuihie, Isiala Ngwa South Local Government Area of Abia State.

Pastor Nwaogwugwu, a retired but dedicated leader of the Seventh-Day Adventist Church, was celebrated for his outstanding contributions to the growth and expansion of the church in the Niger Delta region and beyond.

In his condolence message, Governor Otti described the late cleric as a man whose life was defined by purpose, service, humility and exemplary leadership. He noted that although his death has created a vacuum in his family and the Christian community, his legacy remains enduring and impactful.

“He distinguished himself as a true servant of God, visionary leader, educator, administrator and devoted family man,” Otti said, recalling his remarkable service as Youth and Education Director of the East Nigeria Conference, President of the Bendel Mission, first President of the Eastern Nigeria Union Mission and later Pro-Chancellor and Lecturer at Babcock University.

The Governor further highlighted Pastor Nwaogwugwu’s critical role in establishing the Eastern Nigeria Union Conference (ENUC) and Clifford University, Owerrinta, where he served as Chancellor until his death. He noted that the late cleric lived by the principle that “we are called to the ministry, not to position,” a philosophy that inspired many.

Speaking at the funeral service organised by the Seventh-Day Adventist Church, Governor Otti remarked that Pastor Nwaogwugwu’s name “would continue to open doors even after he has been laid to rest” because of the lasting impact of his service.

The ceremony was attended by prominent personalities including Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, senior church officials from within and outside Nigeria, friends, and admirers.
