Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has officially confirmed his intention to run for Nigeria’s 2027 presidency, dismissing speculation that he might seek a vice-presidential position under another candidate. Obi made the declaration during a public discussion on X Spaces on Sunday night (Dec. 29, 2025), addressing months of uncertainty about his political plans.

The former Anambra State governor told supporters that he will be on the ballot as a presidential candidate and appealed for their backing and prayers ahead of the election. He emphasised that he has no interest in serving as a vice-president, saying he would not seek that role after years of experience in leadership and governance.

Obi also reacted to rumours around his political alignment, clarifying that he is not formally joining the African Democratic Congress (ADC) despite being part of a broader opposition coalition. He reaffirmed his respect for former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar and stated that all cooperating parties agreed to work together, but no one has stepped down for him within the coalition.

As the 2027 election season intensifies, Obi’s clear positioning for the top job signals a continued bid to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress and others in the race for Nigeria’s presidency.
