Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has advised the Amanyanabo of Okochiri Kingdom in Okrika Local Government Area of Rivers State, King Ateke Tom, to refrain from participating in political activities as the build-up to the 2027 elections intensifies.
Speaking during a visit to the monarch, Wike said political engagements in Rivers State would soon heighten and appealed to the traditional ruler and other royal institutions to remain neutral.
“Allow us to play our politics. Don’t get involved. We are not asking for your participation; just allow us handle it,” he said.
Describing Ateke Tom as a highly influential figure, particularly among youths, women and traditional leaders in Okrika, Wike explained that his visit was primarily to express appreciation for the community’s support. He credited the monarch’s leadership for maintaining peace in the area, noting the absence of crises since his ascension to the throne.
Addressing residents at the Okrika council secretariat earlier, Wike cautioned that wrong political choices in 2027 could amount to what he termed “political burial,” stressing that he would not take such risks. He reaffirmed his connection with the Ijaw people and thanked the community for standing by his political camp during recent challenges, while also acknowledging President Bola Tinubu’s intervention in restoring due process in local government administration.
Looking ahead to the 2027 elections, Wike said only candidates with proven integrity and character would receive his support, insisting that past mistakes would not be repeated.
Several community leaders expressed appreciation for Wike’s leadership and support. Chairman of the Rivers Ijaw Peoples Congress, George Sekibo, assured continued support for the minister, while Okrika Local Government Chairman, Akuro Tobin, hailed ongoing developmental projects including the Eleme–Onne stretch of the East–West Road for revitalising economic activities in the area.
Women representatives, led by Deputy Leader of the Rivers State House of Assembly and Okrika constituency representative, Linda Stewart, also pledged support and offered prayers for Wike and his political allies.
