National Coordinator of the Obedient Movement Worldwide, Dr. Yunusa Tanko, has reaffirmed that former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, remains a strong frontrunner for Nigeria’s 2027 presidential election and will not serve as a running mate to any politician within the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
Speaking on Frontline, a current affairs programme on Eagle 102.5 FM, Tanko restated Obi’s pledge to serve only one term if elected, stressing that the promise was made to Nigerians and not to any political party. According to him, Obi intends to complete the remaining four years for the South before power shifts back to the North in 2031, a move he described as a demonstration of credibility and commitment to national unity.
Tanko dismissed claims that the ADC is being influenced by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, insisting the coalition is independently funded and people-driven. He maintained that his focus remains on promoting Obi based on competence, integrity, and capacity to provide what he called a “moral solution” to Nigeria’s leadership crisis.
Obi, who contested under the Labour Party in 2023, recently joined the ADC-backed coalition ahead of the 2027 polls. Tanko said the decision followed wide consultations among diverse groups seeking national transformation.
He outlined key areas Obi would prioritise if elected, including economic discipline, enhanced security, agricultural development, responsible subsidy management, and people-friendly taxation. He added that Obi would strengthen Nigeria’s global image through constructive engagement with the international community.
Responding to criticism over Obi’s exit from the Labour Party, Tanko blamed political sabotage and structural challenges for the move, arguing that the ADC offers a broader and more inclusive platform. He expressed confidence in Obi’s chances of securing the party’s ticket, rating it “ten over ten”.
Tanko also highlighted Obi’s clean record, saying his integrity, data-driven leadership approach, and international credibility remain strong assets. He dismissed claims of desperation, insisting Obi simply aligned with the will of the people.
He further credited young Nigerians as key decision-makers shaping Obi’s political trajectory, expressing optimism that the coalition will deliver a formidable political force ahead of 2027.
