Relatives of twin teenagers abducted in Edo State have contradicted the police’s claim that the victims were rescued through a security operation, stating instead that the kidnappers released the children only after a ransom was paid.

The incident occurred on December 11, 2025, when armed men attacked a residence in Kalabar Quarters, Afokpella, Etsako East Local Government Area. During the attack, the twins’ father, Andrew Ilabeshi, was killed, while his 16-year-old twins, Emmanuel and Emmanuella, were taken away by the assailants.

Following the abduction, the kidnappers reportedly demanded a large ransom. Although the Edo State Police Command later announced that the twins were rescued unharmed through coordinated security efforts, the family has dismissed this account.

Speaking on behalf of the family, Okhale Ilabeshi said no rescue mission took place. He explained that negotiations were carried out with the abductors, a ransom was paid, and the family was directed to a location where the twins were eventually released.

He further revealed that the teenagers were weak and distressed when they were recovered and had not yet been informed of their father’s death.

The family has renewed calls on the government and security agencies to intensify efforts to curb kidnapping and violent crimes in the area, stressing the need for improved security to protect vulnerable communities.
