A 13‑year‑old boy has died after being allegedly shot by a soldier in Ikot Abasi Local Government Area on New Year’s Day, prompting anger and demands for justice from community leaders and human rights advocates.

The victim, identified as Timothy Daniel, was reportedly returning from a midnight church crossover service with his 15‑year‑old sister when the incident occurred shortly after 12:00 a.m. on January 1. Eyewitnesses say a soldier deployed at a nearby guarded compound allegedly harassed the girl. When Timothy intervened, the confrontation escalated and the soldier opened fire, killing the teenager instantly. The tragedy disrupted celebrations and sparked outrage in the area.

The Nigerian Army has confirmed that the matter is under investigation, with the Military Police handling the case and assurances that due process will be followed.

Human rights lawyer Inibehe Effiong has called on military and state authorities to ensure that the soldier is held accountable and court‑martialed for murder. He criticized the private company where the soldier was attached for failing to reach out to the grieving family and emphasized that no citizen — especially a child — should be killed by those meant to protect them, urging compensation and justice for Timothy’s family.

The community of Ukpum Ete has expressed deep sorrow over the loss and demanded swift action to identify and punish those responsible, while residents continue to mourn the young boy’s death.
