Trump Tells Republicans Losing Congress Could Lead to New Impeachment

The U.S. President Donald Trump on Tuesday warned Republican lawmakers that failing to hold Congress in this year’s midterm elections could open the door to another impeachment by Democrats.

Addressing the House Republican caucus at a policy retreat, Trump described the midterms as a crucial test for his administration. “We have to win the midterms. If we don’t, they’ll find a reason to impeach me,” he said.

Public sentiment appears uncertain, with polls showing many voters believe the country is headed in the wrong direction and economic concerns are a top priority. In November, all 435 House seats and one-third of Senate seats will be up for grabs, shaping whether Republicans can continue supporting Trump’s agenda in the final two years of his term.

Trump is the only U.S. president to have been impeached twice. His first impeachment in 2019 stemmed from allegations that he pressured Ukraine to investigate Joe Biden, and the second followed the January 6, 2021 Capitol attack. Both times, the Senate did not convict him. Trump has repeatedly dismissed the impeachments as politically motivated attacks.

Calls for renewed impeachment have emerged after a U.S. operation in Venezuela aimed at capturing President Nicolás Maduro, with Democrats, including Rep. Maxine Waters, suggesting Trump’s actions could again put him at risk.

Republicans have discussed using the threat of impeachment to energize their base, despite Trump not appearing on the ballot. Midterms historically favor the party not in the White House, which may challenge Republican efforts to maintain congressional control.

With the 2026 midterms approaching, Trump’s warning highlights the high stakes for both parties, as control of Congress will influence legislative priorities and could determine whether the president faces another impeachment.
