The Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) has launched an operation to track down producers of fake television sets following a viral video circulating on social media showing what appeared to be counterfeit TVs at the Alaba International Market in Lagos.
The footage, reportedly filmed in the bustling market, showed stacks of TV boxes labeled with popular brand names and claimed the products were fraudulently assembled locally. The narrator in the video alleged that some traders were printing official logos on the cartons, remote controls, and frame edges to make low‑quality units appear genuine.
In response, SON officials said they have begun identifying those responsible for the fraudulent activities and are working closely with security operatives and market unions to investigate and dismantle the network behind the fake electronics.
The development has drawn criticism from members of the public, with some residents warning buyers to be cautious when purchasing electronics in busy markets, pointing out that counterfeit and original products are often sold side‑by‑side. Many social media users also condemned the practice, urging consumers to verify product authenticity through trusted dealers and official serial number checks before buying.
