The Nigeria Labour Congress and stakeholders aligned with Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, have urged the national leadership of the Labour Party to suspend any plans to parade candidates for the 2027 general elections, warning that such steps could worsen internal tensions.
The groups reacted to recent public comments by senior party figures that triggered speculation about early presidential ambitions within the party. They maintained that no individual should be projected as a candidate when the party has neither released an official timetable nor resolved ongoing leadership and structural disputes.
According to them, the Labour Party must first focus on rebuilding internal cohesion, strengthening its organisational framework, and restoring confidence among members before engaging in discussions about future elections. They stressed that adherence to the party’s constitution and internal democratic processes remains critical to its survival.
The NLC-aligned bloc also cautioned that premature political positioning could distract the party from its core mission of representing workers’ interests and promoting people-centred governance.
They called on all factions to exercise restraint, prioritise unity, and allow the appropriate party organs to determine the way forward as preparations for the 2027 elections gradually take shape.
