Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has promised that the state government will rebuild shops destroyed by a recent fire incident near the Ekpoma Police Division.
The governor made the pledge while visiting the affected area to assess the damage and sympathise with traders whose businesses were destroyed. He clarified that contrary to reports circulating on social media, the police station was not burnt, as the fire only affected shops located within the premises.
Governor Okpebholo described the incident as unfortunate and assured shop owners that the government would act swiftly to restore their means of livelihood. He emphasised his administration’s commitment to supporting small businesses and ensuring economic stability in the area.
He also raised concerns over what he termed coordinated attempts to create tension and insecurity, stressing that the state government would not tolerate actions aimed at destabilising communities.
Police authorities explained that the fire was caused by an electrical fault following the restoration of power to the shops. The blaze spread rapidly before it could be contained, but no lives were lost.
The governor called for calm among residents and traders, assuring them that adequate security measures would be put in place while reconstruction plans are implemented.
