Anambra Residents Challenge EEDC Over ₦38.1m Electricity Bill

Residents of Umuodum in Ogba Quarters, Mbaukwu, Anambra State, have petitioned the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) to intervene in a dispute with the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) over a contested ₦38.1 million electricity bill. The community claims the hefty amount was wrongly issued after power had been disconnected and insists it has already paid for the electricity in question.

In their petition, community members accused EEDC of colluding with former local leaders to demand payment for the bill, alleging that documentation of previous payments was ignored. They also expressed frustration that the notice of the alleged debt was delivered through a youth leader instead of the recognised community chairman, which they say raises questions about transparency and proper procedure.

The petition urges NERC to summon EEDC to present evidence of the claimed debt before a regulatory panel in Awka or officially confirm that previous payments were not made, in order to resolve the impasse. EEDC’s communications representatives were approached for comment but referred inquiries within the company’s broader communications team.
